The University of Delhi’s push for Institution of Eminence (IoE) status had initiated widespread discussions on enhancing research, teaching, and adopting interdisciplinary approaches with societal impact. The strategy was aimed at funding and a holistic review of the university’s functions, including teaching, research, and funding practices. Additionally, an appeal for increased government support for higher education was firmly made, highlighting India’s rich academic heritage. Given the high-quality education, extensive programs, and large student body, substantial resource allocation was sought by the University of Delhi to sustain its excellence and bolster India’s global standing.
The University of Delhi was recognized as an IoE by the Ministry of Education (MoE) (erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development), Government of India, vide its communication dated 4th September 2019. Accordingly, the MoE and the University of Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 27th February 2020. The MoE subsequently issued a notification on 2nd March 2020 declaring the University of Delhi as an “Institution of Eminence”.
