Delhi School of Climate Change & Sustainability

DSCCS is a Centre for Advanced Research in the field of Climate change and includes focused research on various components of climate like the Biosphere, Hydrosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and Cryosphere. A primary focus is on ocean circulation and its impact on climate, including the fate of Himalayan glaciers. Significant research is being done around green energy and sustainability. The school runs with 14 post-doctoral fellows working in various areas of climate change and sustainability, besides a Director, Joint Director, and Officer on Special Duty.

Outreach: DSCCS is an interdisciplinary research and knowledge disseminating center with very active outreach programs directed towards empowering the common man, educators, administrators, and foreign diplomats, including representatives from international organizations and foreign governments, with the scientific aspects of climate change and sustainability.

Significant Areas: Interactions amongst components of climate are the lithosphere, the biosphere, the hydrosphere, the cryosphere, and the atmosphere. Impact of Ocean circulation on climate change. Carbon cycle and carbon sequestration. Developing a country’s perspectives on climate change involves understanding and addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by developing nations in the context of climate change and developing green energy and sustainability technologies.

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14, and 15 pertain to Climate Action, Life in Hydrosphere, and Life on Land. The Delhi School of Climate Change is cultivating ideas to meet the SDGs, particularly sustainability in context of India. Developing countries like India have priorities for SDGs that do not match those of the Developed World. The DSCCS is working in all spheres and developing technologies to meet SDGs 13,14 and 15.

Learning from the Past: DSCCS offers a program exploring the transition from an Ice House world to a Green House (Warm World), examining both natural and human impacts on past climates, the development and future threats of Antarctica and Greenland’s ice sheets, the origins and controlling factors of the Indian Monsoon System, and the differing climate impacts on the developed and developing worlds. These studies aim to assist policy makers to combat climate deterioration and highlight India’s geopolitical concerns.
