Prof. Yogesh Singh

It is a matter of immense pride for all of us that the University of Delhi has been designated as the “Institution of Eminence” by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India on March 02, 2020, which is an outcome of our sustained endeavors of quality teaching-learning and cutting edge research while pursuing social outreach and other extra-curricular activities, with much enthusiasm.

The Institution of Eminence scheme, a significant initiative launched by the Government of India, aims to elevate higher educational institutions, buttressing them on their path to become world-class teaching and research institutions.

I feel this initiative has played a significant role in providing the necessary support to the University to accomplish its cherished goals more vigorously while, at the same time, recognizing our pursuit of excellence in higher education and research. This prestigious designation promises financial support to the tune of Rs. 1000 crores, aimed primarily at bolstering our infrastructure, enhancing our teaching methodologies and propel our research efforts. This recognition and support reaffirm our position as a leader in higher education globally.

I am delighted that in order to achieve the status of a world-class institution, the University has focused on critical areas, including befitting enhancement of physical and research infrastructure, information technology infrastructure and adequate support systems for students and faculty members. Over the last four years, the University has made significant strides towards becoming a world-class institution with the continuous and constructive support of the Ministry of Education. Key infrastructure initiatives in this direction include the construction of an academic-cum-administrative building, hostels-cum-transit accommodation complex, WUS Health Centre and expansion of the existing Central Reference Library and Conference Centre. The academic initiatives further include the development of instrumentation facilities, library resources and academic software.

Our national and international rankings underscore our steady progression towards becoming a premier teaching-learning and research institution. It is a matter of pride for all of us that the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2024 has ranked the University 6th among universities of our Nation. Similarly, we are placed 328th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025 while ranking 1st among our Central Universities and 7th among all our higher educational institutions. Notably, we have achieved 1st position in India and 220th position globally in the QS World University Rankings 2024 concerning sustainability which is an important parameter of growth at a time when the world is really concerned about environment friendly progression of the humanity at large.

As an Institution of Eminence, we stand on the brink of a new era abound with opportunities for our University. We are thrilled about the potential to secure the resources necessary to create world-class infrastructure for our students and faculty members. This significant milestone is a giant leap towards enabling the University fraternity to unleash their full potential and contribute to our collective success.

At this historic juncture, I believe that every stakeholder of the University, in their respective capacities, should collectively participate in the journey of progression of this Institution of Eminence and witness the transformative impact in every sphere of endeavor of this University during the Amrit Kaal of our Independence, for a Viksit Bharat by the year 2047, as envisioned by our Hon’ble Prime Minister.

Best Wishes
