Director of Delhi School of Public Health

Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai

Prof. RNK Bamezai, did his Ph.D. from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi; and served as Faculty (first at Institute of Medical Sciences, IMS, BHU and then at Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU) since 1980. He was Dean, School of Life Sciences (SLS); and School of Computational and Integrative Sciences (SCIS); Coordinator, National Centre of Applied Human Genetics (NCAHG) at SLS and Bioinformatics, JNU; and served as Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Katra, Jammu, J&K. Credited with around 40 years’ experience of teaching and guiding research and more than 140 papers published in journals, like: JBC, Eur. J. Human Genetics, Human Genetics, PLoS Pathogens, PLoS Genetics, CELL, Nucleic Acid Research, Journal of Molecular Modeling, Briefings in Bioinformatics, (Nature)Scientific Reports, he has trained 400 students; guided ~40 Ph.D. students and facilitated in creation of Human Genetics/Genomics related advanced research in different universities across the country. He also served JNU as: Cluster Director, Trans-disciplinary Cluster; Chairman, Intellectual Property Management Cell; Founder & Chairman of the Institutional Ethics Review Board. Professor Bamezai has been on the advisory councils, academic and executive councils and task forces of several institutions and scientific bodies and continues to be associated with international and national research journals as an editor-in-chief, associate editor or as an editorial board member. Apart from associating with mentoring programmes of students and young faculty in the country, he has contributed to the growth of higher education and the management of Indian science for development and self- reliance. His concern in Public Health and creating genomic literates within the society has resulted in establishing Genomics and Public (GAP) Health Foundation in Dehradun; and Delhi School of Public Health, University of Delhi as its Founder Hon. Director. In recognition of the contributions in research and institution building, he has received many awards, delivered several orations, and has been a Fellow of NASI, NAMS, INSA, besides receiving Padma Shri (by the President of India, in the area of Science and Engineering, in the year 2012).
